I'm quitting you facebook.
It's not that I don't love you. It's not that you don't help me communicate with people. It's not that I want to terminate this relationship for life.
It's not you, it's me.
I think I may love you too much, facebook.
You see, you help me communicate, but you don't really help me be in community. You allow me to find people and stalk them and look at their pictures and blogs and friends of friends of friends, but I'm at a distance that lets that feel normal. Chellooo, it's not normal to be looking at other peoples' lives that way.
I am a creeper.
Facebook, you're also a time suck. Time I could be spending being productive. Time I could use cleaning my stuff. Time when I could be visiting the places in Durham I need to see before I leave. Time I could be improving my photog skills. Time I could be using to be creative. Time I could spend being in deep thought. Time I could drink coffee with a friend in person or over a phone call, rather than drinking my coffee and looking at that friend's last month of life via status updates.
The second part of leaving you facebook is that I want to know that I can. I want to know that I'm not addicted to you. I'm doing this by not changing my password. I'm holding myself accountable to not spend any---->ZERO quality time with you facebook. I want to know that you are not a priority in my life because you know what facebook?
You're not important enough to be a priority.
All of that said, I'll be back in about 40 days which happens to be around Easter. You know, the end of Lent.
To my friends: During this time, I'll still be blogging. I may talk about if I miss facebook and if I need to know what's going on in your life. I'll be on twitter, but on a pretty limited basis. I'll be around to g-chat. I'll be around if you want to text me or call me or BETTER YET want to see me in real life. So, my lines of communication are open, let's be in community.
I think the person this will be most difficult on will be my dad. He's one of the people I talk to most often on facebook chat. Guess he'll have to call me. ( :
Amy. That was an inspiring. I might join you, or at least try to cut down on internet time in general. I agree...There are so many other more important things to do other than be on facebook.

ReplyDelete@Jody, Totally! We are on the same page, but it's been less than 24 hours and although I haven't really been tempted yet, I have impulsively reached for my phone and the link in my header to check FB. I refrained. ( :
